imagineCALGARY Welcomes LEAF
Earlier this summer, the number of imagineCALGARY Partners grew to 56 with the addition of LEAF -- Leaders in Environmentally Accountable Foodservice. Established in 2009, LEAF helps restaurants reduce their environmental impact, and makes it easy for diners to identify green restaurants. The company provides a benchmark to measure the environmental sustainability of foodservice establishments in Canada, and fosters sustainability by working with the community to support the local economy.
imagineCALGARY recently had an opportunity to talk with Janine Bolton, President of LEAF, to learn more about their plans for promoting sustainability in Calgary.
Q |
What prompted LEAF to join the imagineCALGARY Partnership? |
A |
With the emergence of social media, there are so many networking channels these days that work wonderfully to bring people together. However, in and of each other, these methods don’t put people face-to-face to build relationships. Getting out and chatting in person with like-minded people is where the real magic happens. The imagineCALGARY Partnership is a great way to stay in touch with all that’s going on with sustainability in Calgary and to work together towards our common goal of a more sustainable community. |
Q |
How does LEAF's focus align with the imagineCALGARY vision? |
A |
imagineCALGARY’s vision speaks about convergence of people and ideas and creating a connected community. LEAF shares the same vision, in Calgary and across Canada. Our mandate is to bring people together, not only in the foodservice industry, but farmers, producers and consumers as well, to work towards a more sustainable, less wasteful foodservice industry. |
Q |
How does LEAF fit into the imagineCALGARY Plan? |
A |
By helping Calgary restaurants become more sustainable, LEAF is playing a part in working towards many aspects of the imagineCALGARY Plan. Our objective is to help restaurants of all sizes adopt sustainable practices and commit to positive social changes in the community. LEAF certified restaurants will also help to create a greater sense of pride among employees and the community. |
Q |
Are there any particular Targets within the imagineCALGARY Plan that LEAF will work to achieve? |
A |
As part of our criteria, LEAF certified restaurants will increase their energy efficiency, and reduce waste of food, water and materials. LEAF also promotes relationship building within the community by encouraging local food purchasing and sustainable food production. By targeting these specific outcomes, we are helping to realize imagineCALGARY’s Plan for a more sustainable, self-reliant Calgary. |
