2010 and Beyond: Partnership Event a Great Learning and Sharing Experience!
After a great partnership event in December there are high hopes for 2011. Over 130 people turned out to the Annual Partnership event to share success stories and hear Author Mark Anielski as well as Mayor Nenshi. The Mayor encouraged all members if they were to do one thing it would be to engage at least one other person around action towards building a more sustainable city. He discussed that need to close what he called the "say-do" gap and the need to act on those things that we are talking about. Citizens need to be constantly reminding each other about our vision.

The theme of the December 7th event was imagineCALGARY 2010 and Beyond! It has been five years since the imagining process began and we wanted to 'take stock' of where we had been, celebrate our successes, and look to the challenges ahead.

Measuring success is a crucial part of how we are going to meet the targets and goals in the Long Range Urban Sustainability Plan and was the focus of the three partner presentations, which looked at the different ways partners are measuring sustainability.

Andree Iffrig of DIRTT Environmental Solutions looked at the variety of ways that DIRTT helps clients reduce their footprint and spends a lot of time not only talking the sustainability talk but walking the sustainability walk.

Janine Bolton from) L.E.A.F. (Leadership in Environmentally Accountable Foodservice showed how LEAF provides a benchmark to measure the environmental sustainability of foodservice establishments in Canada, and fosters sustainability by working with the community to support the local economy. LEAF is the first national foodservice certification of its kind.

Steve Wyton is the Manager of Corporate Asset Management with The City of Calgary and talked about how the social bottom line intersects with Infrastructure development and more broadly Social Return on Investment.

Mark Anielski was the keynote speaker and author of The Economics of Happiness. Mark believes we need to measure progress in terms of what matters most in our lives (quality of life) and use indicators of progress that align with those values. His vision is an economy of well-being focused on the quality of life conditions of households. Households, he believes, represent the original enterprise and are the key building blocks of vibrant, flourishing, and civil societies.

John Lewis of Intelligent Futures was happy to present the imagineCALGARY Awards to two well deserving organizations. The imagineCALGARY Awards were developed to acknowledge the incredible work that is being done across the city to create a sustainable future for Calgary. The award winners reflect the best of these local initiatives and achievements."
